Theme 2Risks and Vulnerabilities

Coordinators: Valérie-Inés de LAVILLE (Cerege) and Michel AUDIFFREN (CeRCA)

This axis brings together teams of social science researchers addressing four research programs at complementary levels of analysis: Macro (regulation and prudential policies), Meso (Corporate Social Responsibility, organizational field, market strategies) and Micro (cognitive performance, psychophysiological indicators like life stories, biographies, consumer behavior). The research programs address the following questions:

  • Financial risks and new regulations (person in charge: Sophie Nivoix – Cerege): This program aims to develop an analysis of the process of economic and financial integration based on the study of changes in the financial system and their implications in terms of evaluation and management of financial assets, but also of public policy regulating markets and their stakeholders.
  • Markets, cultures and societies (person in charge: Valérie-Inès de La Ville – Cerege): This program aims to better understand the risks and vulnerabilities related to consumer practices and the commercialization of culture and daily life since the end of the 19th century until the present day, in the perspective of contributing to a general and interdisciplinary anthropology of commercial spaces.
  • Preservation of seniors’ autonomy (people in charge: Michel Audiffren – Cerca and Romuald Bodin – Gresco): this research program called PRAUSE aims to examine the influence of the individual and social determinants on the cognitive and social vulnerability of seniors (55 years and more) who are non-institutionalized in order to contribute to the preservation of their autonomy in everyday life.
  • Risks related to water (person in charge: Thierry Sauzeau – Criham, GiS « History and Marine Sciences »): Risks related to water cover a very wide variety of situations: freshwater whose abundance is feared (flood) but also its scarcity (low water level, drought), but which shares with seawater the risks arising from its quality (pollution), its safety (drowning, sinking) and its extreme levels (drought, flood, submersion). Despite this diversity, the anthropogenic use of water and the stakes that arise from it expose societies to hazards whose faulty awareness creates vulnerabilities. The program aims to confront the work related to the vulnerability created within human systems – public swimming pools or urbanization contexts – which are subject to the hazards related to water. Does the damage caused by the hazard result from the accumulation of micro-faults in the organizations responsible for taking charge of the risk? Can we explore our collective incapacity to value the feedback of experience, and can one measure the tendency to minimize before forgetting the existence of the hazard, provider of risk? Does the acceptability of risk vary according to context and time?

This axis develops its research projects in partnership with companies or organizations located in the region: Pôle Image Magelis, Rectorat de l’Académie de Poitiers, Agence Régionale de la Santé, Musées et Médiathèques, Musée de la Bande Dessinée, Bureau National Inter-professionnel du Cognac, Cité Internationale de la Bande Dessinée et de l’Image, so as to make a direct transfer of knowledge towards the stakeholders of the territory in order to contribute to the territorial dynamic.
