The creation of the MSHS: historical markers
June 12, 1995: the MSHS’ statutes as a “university research centre” (Centre of Humanities and Sciences) were adopted by the Board of Poitiers University. Then, the MSHS was able to initiate a real interdisciplinary research policy.
The premises, built in 1996, accommodate research laboratories and general services. The first administrative staff and researchers integrated the building in the spring of 1996 and in January 1997.
June 27, 1996: the MSHS becomes a “mixed service unit” (UMS) under the French Department of Research, the University of Poitiers and the CNRS.
From 1996 to 1999, the MSHS was recognized as PPF (multi-training curriculum) in the “restructuring a scientific field” category.
In 2004 and 2008 the MSHS was re-elected as a UMS and in 2013, it acquired the new status of USR (service and research unit) awarded by both its supports, the CNRS and Poitiers University. It can now develop its own research programme in addition to the service activities that it gives to its 15 associated SHS research laboratories.
In spring 1996, the Centre became a living place.
In March 1996, the first ‘inhabitants’ of the MSHS were able to move in: members of the administrative team, and soon after, the members of the first research laboratories.
The moving in has remained active since January 1997.
Since 1998, the MSHS has welcomed in its premises seven research laboratories at full strength, scientists of other associated laboratories, visiting researchers and SHES doctoral schools.
Its current situation:
The MSHS currently unites 15 SHES laboratories of the University of Poitiers; including 3 Mixed Research Units UMR-CNRS (CERCA, CESCM and MIGRINTER), 1 team from UMR-ITEM (CRLA) and 11 host teams.
7 laboratories inside the campus building: CERCA (Centre for Research in Cognition and Learning, second location in Tours), ITEM-CRLA (Institute of Modern Texts and Manuscripts – Latin American Archives Research Centre), FORELL (Forms and Representations in Linguistics and Literature), GRESCO (Sociological Research and Study Groups in Central Western France, second location in Limoges), MIGRINTER (International Migration, Migratory Spaces and Societies), MIMMOC (Memory, Identity and Marginality in the Contemporary Western World) and RURALITES (Rural Urban Links Environment Territories Societies).
Eight laboratories relocated on campus or in historical buildings in the city: CAPS (Laboratory for Research in Psychopathology: New Symptoms and Social Links – Clinical evaluation of Behaviour and Psychosexuality), CESCM (Centre for Medieval Studies), CEREGE (Centre for Research in Management, second location in La Rochelle), CRIHAM (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in History, Art and Musicology, second location in Limoges), the CRIEF (Centre for Research in Economic and Financial Integration), HERMA (Research Centre in Hellenization and Romanization in the Ancient World – Identities and Intercultural Phenomena), MAPP (German Metaphysics and Practical Philosophy), TECHNE (Digital Technologies For Education).
Other sites hosting MSHS teams
The Hotel Berthelot, the Department of Humanities and Arts, Literature and Languages, or even the IAE welcome some of the research teams federated by the MSHS.
The several directors of the MSHS:
Eric Espéret, Claire Gérard, Michel Audiffren, Alain Ferrand, Myriam Soria. Sitting director François Rigalleau, Assistant director: Lydie Bodiou.
Our research activity focuses on three unifying lines of research: “Language and Cognition: Corpus, Behaviour and Education”, “Markets, Consumer Cultures, Autonomy and Migration”, “Culture and Heritage”. This programme is built around the projects supported by the State-Region Project Contract – 2007-2013 CPER and then the 2014-2020 CPER – along with calls for proposals the MSHS has organized to support university research.
The MSHS offers resources and shared equipment including a resource library with over 40,000 titles and three technology platforms (Digital Platform and Platform of Human Behaviour Analysis in Real Time and Geomatics platform).
